How We Celebrate the Holidays in Midtown

Gentle temperatures don’t mean “bah, humbug” in Midtown during the holidays. In fact, there’s even more to do, because our idea of a “cold” day is in the mid-50s, and there’s plenty of atmosphere here in which to celebrate.

Like many great cities, the Holiday occasions bring added life to the center of Atlanta, because so many families have holiday traditions here. And let’s admit it, a bit of bustle is part of what we look forward to: “City sidewalks, busy sidewalks, dressed in holiday style.”

In fact, the choices for celebrating your holidays in Midtown – and all over Atlanta – are so abundant that here we’ll start with just a couple of tips that open right away.

Winter Wonderland – Yes, in Atlanta

A longstanding family favorite is a visit to Winter Wonderland at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. Opening November 17 and running through January 17, Winter Wonderland lets you see up close how the holidays are celebrated around the world – all within the belt of Interstate 285. Trees decorated in every style twinkle and cultural objects from far away are displayed for your enjoyment as if by Santa’s overnight magic – even where Santa goes by another name or is altogether unknown. Choral performances and other happenings punctuate this unusual juxtaposition of human holidays and animal artifacts. Something about carolers singing under a T-Rex skeleton is extra memorable.

The Authentic Art & Craft Experience

Another inside tip – and right in the middle of Atlanta – is the Holiday Shopping Spectacular November 18-19 at the Georgia Freight Depot. Completed in 1869, the Freight Depot is one of Atlanta’s oldest buildings. It’s perfect for holiday atmosphere and an ideal setting for the Indie Craft Experience, a gathering of more than 170 artists and craftspeople, vintage vendors, and delicious food offerings. They exhibit here annually in what’s been called Atlanta’s premier crafts event. If you’re looking for a gift that won’t be duplicated, here is where you’ll find it.
